Scientific Plausibility Consulting
For Fiction Writers
Writing science fiction?
Struggling with scientific worldbuilding?
Scientific plausibility consulting may be for you! Send me your worldbuilding details (and a few science-heavy scenes, if necessary), and I'll work with you on determining accuracy, consistency, and plausibility in your story—no matter what stage your book is in.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is scientific accuracy important in science fiction?
Sometimes it's not. Many readers don't know or care whether all of the details of a story could really happen. However, some amount of plausibility makes any story easier to believe, and you'll avoid isolating those readers who will turn up their noses when writers use "lightyear" and "parsec" as units of time (they are distances).
What makes you qualified to offer these services?
I hold a degree in physics from UC Berkeley, and I am also an educator. In other words, I am trained in both the sciences and in how to present them in a way that is accessible to a wide variety of people.
I am also a science fiction writer myself, so I will work to understand what you are trying to accomplish with the story in order to help you balance creative license with believability.
What topics can you help with?
I can answer many questions about space travel, astronomy, theoretical physics, quantum mechanics, orbits, relativity, time manipulation, etc. I'm also very happy to translate those dense scholarly articles you've been reading for research into plain English—it's what I do for my students every day.
I have some knowledge of biology and chemistry, with an emphasis on genetics, but I have many limitations in this field, as it is not my specialty. Feel free to inquire, and I will give an honest assessment of whether or not I feel I can help with your project.
While my background in hard sciences may make my google research a bit more effective than average, I am not qualified to help meaningfully with computer science or programming concepts.
Content boundaries: If you couldn't recommend it to a teenager due to extreme violence or sexual content, I will not read it, either.
What is your pricing structure?
Base package: Detailed analysis of up to 1,000 words of worldbuilding explanation and questions
1 hour video chat discussion

Note: this price structure assumes few (or no) scenes need individual commentary. If you feel the need to have an entire book read, or if your worldbuilding explanation is longer than 1,000 words, please contact me for a personalized quote.
