16 Field trip
Updated: Mar 5
I made a list of 100 things I should do that scare me. In 2020, I plan to complete all 100.
I have never hosted a field trip for students! So when the computer science teacher at our school sent me the information about a trip he was going to take his students on, to the National Ignition Facility at the Lawrence Livermore National Lab, I was a little nervous.
The planning and administrative aspects were a pain, but the kids had a great time! They were really engaged, appreciative, and sweet, and they asked great questions. It was worth the time.
I don't know if I'd miss a day of school for this particular field trip again, since only a total of 19 kids were able to go (max was 24, but I had a few dropouts), but I would consider a field trip in general, if I knew in advance where the funding would be coming from.
I was calling this a level 2 fear. That feels appropriate enough—it was more intense than most fears at that level, but less because of actual fear and more because of stress and inconvenience.
P.S. It might look like I skipped #15. I didn't! I just can't post about it without releasing sensitive information.
